Drinking fountains

Summary
Quick reference guide for key criteria

Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Planning, design and positioning
- Locate near facilities such as walking and cycling pathways and activity areas
- Install where there is an opportunity for passive surveillance (CPTED values)
- Comply with Austroads 500 mm min offset from path edge to any obstacle
- Ensure equal access. Must be accessible 180 degrees to cater for left/right handed people
- Do NOT install a drinking fountain inside a fenced dog off leash park.
Drinking fountain requirements
- Must be installed by a licensed plumber. A plumbing compliance permit is required. Must have Watermark certification (includes all plumbing fittings and pipes)
- Water filters must NOT be installed.
- Push button (‘time flow’ tapware) or lever controls, water outlet must be close to front of unit. Max operating force 19.5N. Timed flow required
- (A) Equal access model (890 to 940 mm H). Where one unit installed, must select equal access model (890 mm H preferred)
- (B) Lower height model (640 to 650 mm H). Where two or more units installed, select equal access first and then lower height model may be used (650 mm H preferred)
- (C) dual height model (890 and 650 mm H)
- Dog drinking bowl attached to a drinking fountain is not preferred for health reasons. If installed, dog bowl must be on opposite side of the post to the drinking fountain bowl. Preferred install: dog drinking bowl attached to a stand alone post with a tap.
- Waste water must drain internally within unit, to prevent spilling onto pathways.
Finishes, footings and connections
- Drinking fountain must be Grade 316 stainless steel. Do NOT powdercoat/2 pack epoxy
- Bolt down to finished surface using anti-vandal ‘armour rings’ or equivalent
- Concrete footing as per engineering specifications
- (D) Must link to mains water supply with the appropriate: dual check value, isolation valve and pressure limiting valve. Installed in an easily accessible location within 1.0 m of the drinking fountain, not inside the fountain.
- An isolation valve (for emergency shut off) on the supply line of each embellishment
- (E) Disperse waste water via outlet pipe to a sanitary drain or soakage trench. Alternate discharge permissible with site evaluation.

Drinking fountain with bottle filling station (combined unit) requirements
- Must be installed by a licensed plumber. A plumbing compliance permit is required. Must have Watermark certification (includes all plumbing fittings and pipes)
- Water filters must NOT be installed.
- Push button (‘time flow’ tapware) or lever controls, water outlet must be close to front of unit. Max operating force 19.5N. Timed flow required
- (A) Equal access model (890 to 940 mm H). 890 mm H preferred. Max reach height for bottle filling station 1350 mm.
- Do NOT install a dual height drinking fountain combined with a bottle filling station, as the bottle filling station may be difficult to access by a person using a wheelchair
- Do NOT attach a dog bowl to the rear of a combined drinking fountain/bottle filling station, as the bottle filling station may be difficult to access by a person using a wheelchair. Where a dog drinking bowl is installed, it is preferred that the unit drains internally.
- Waste water must drain internally within unit, to prevent spilling onto pathways.
