Irrigation
Summary
Quick reference guide for key criteria

Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Planning, design and positioning
- Located in road reserves, parks, sportsfields or other council controlled land
- Irrigation/valve boxes installed away from main playing surfaces (sports grounds)
- Ensure components and fixings are flush with finished surface
- Irrigation should be designed in such a way that irrigation coverage is consistent and effective
- The use of water should be as such as to avoid waste/runoff
- Compatible with Smart Irrigation Control System
- Where appropriate, opportunities for the use of recycled water should be considered (must meet legislative requirements).
Landscape irrigation requirements
- Design – to suit site conditions. Requires professional interpretation and judgement by a certified irrigation designer. Where works incorporate recycled water, the certified irrigation designer must provide proof of previous experience and understanding of current guidelines
- Design – must leave existing watercourses in their natural state
- Design – minimise over-spray to paths and seating areas
- (A) Non-drinking water – preferred (captured rainwater, storm water runoff and/or recycled water) Where non-drinking water is used, appropriate piping and signage must be used
- (B) Mains water supply – metered supply. Must be registered with Unity Water
- (C) Backflow device – required between mains supply and irrigation system. The RPZ should be located after any drinking water infrastructure, as close to the irrigation line as possible
- (D) Irrigation control system – waterproof housing, battery backup
- (E) Pipework – high, medium or low density polyethylene (HDPE, MDPE or LDPE) dependent of site conditions
- (F) Valves – manual and/or automatic. Where specified, valve boxes to be lockable
- (G) Emitters – spray and/drip emitters
- Fittings – threaded poly risers, articulated poly risers, poly elbows and or bands
- Wire and cable – multi-core irrigation cable, DBR/DBY (direct bury) wire joiners
- Electrical supply – house in irrigation controller enclosure, 240V mains power and run on a 24V system
